How to create a color palette

Color palette

When looking for the color palette for my home, it felt overwhelming at the beginning, especially because I had a white canvas and didn’t know where to start. I wanted my place to feel cozy, inviting, and calm, a reflection of our personality, and one thing was for sure: I wanted to incorporate green as it is my favorite color. This awareness was a great starting point, and after some reading and trials, I realized finding the right choice turned out to be easier than I thought!

Here, I am summarizing some of the tips I learned on how to put my color palette together. My main advice: relax and pay attention to your surroundings! Let me explain what I mean:

Clothes

When you open your closet and look at your clothes, do you find any pattern? Which colors do you use the most? Here you will find a hint of the colors that make you feel good.

Objects you love

What are the colors in that piece of art or object you love? Analyzing them from this perspective might help you realize not only which colors work well together, but also which ones match the style you are looking for

Feelings you want to evoke

Do you want your place to feel cozy, relaxed, or energetic? Now think about the places you have been that make you feel that way. That could be anywhere! The mountains or a lake, a museum or a coffee shop. Pay attention to the colors and get inspiration from the outside world.

At this point, you have probably identified some colors that work well together based on your taste, these will be the base for creating your color palette. Now, it is a matter of distributing them in the right proportion and creating accents.

Your color palette should guide any item you want to place in your space. It doesn’t mean all rooms should look the same. I like the idea of creating individual spaces by changing the distribution and proportions of the color palette; this helps to keep a cohesive look throughout your home.
